CC2018 Copy paste bug

I’ve discovered a bug in the Copy/Paste (specifically, Paste in Place) function in InDesign CC2018.

When I work on a college alumni mag, I copy the header from the previous issue to the master page of the new edition and then change the issue (from Fall to Winter, for example). The header contains 4 separate text boxes, which are all set to align bottom in the Text Frame Options dialog. They align along a guideline.

However, when I copy this set of 4 boxes from last issue’s file and paste them into a new document, the pasted items are all set to align top in Text Frame Options. Somehow, copy/pasting them loses this setting.

I tested this in CC2017 and it works fine to copy/paste from one file to another. But in CC2018, it does not work.

The files in question were originally done in CC2017, but saved as CC2018 files before I did the Copy operation.

Setting them back to Align Bottom fixes the problem, but this step should not be required, and it’s troubling – who knows what else is not being maintained by the Copy Paste function?

I can post a screenshot if it will help. I’m trying to remember how to get that into here.

That’s definitely troubling, Matt. You can post a screen shot here by uploading it to a site like imgbb or imgur and then posting the URL here.

However, we’re not going to be able to help with bugs like that, of course. You might get more notice from the InDesign team by posting it on their wishlist/bug reporting form here: https://indesign.uservoice.com

      Hi Matt,
      I’ve already seen this problem.

Let’s try to save to IDML and reopen the original document before copy and paste.

Claudio – Thanks for the tip.

I saved to IDML and reopened the source file before copying, and yes, that did fix the problem. The boxes now come in bottom-aligned, in the correct position.

So, I guess we’ll have to watch out for this going forward.

It’s still troubling, but at least I know what to do when it happens.

      Thanks!

Update – after I saved the file to IDML and tried this again, it worked once.

However, I have to do this several times, as each section of the magazine is a different InDesign file. So, I went back and saved both the source file and a new target file as IDMLs and reopened them, and then did the copy paste, and it messed up the boxes again. Same problem – it changed the alignment to top align.

This really not a workable solution.

I wasn’t able to replicate the issue in limited testing, but curious whether it still occurs if you try using an object style that aligns text to the bottom of the frame?

Good things to try. I’ll have to test again – probably not for a few days (have to get the project done first)

I had the same problem with a customer in Italy and we noticed that the same document on another Mac worked well, maybe you could try also to reset indesign’s preferences

      FWIW, Adobe knows about it.

And FWIW, it’s driving us crazy here. Saving as an IDML and reopening and saving as a new ID document works for us so far, but we have, literally, thousands of legacy files and double saving them isn’t high on my fun list.

That’s really not a good news in the new year.

Happy New Year to all :)
