Caption Numbering Bug ..

I don’t know if it’s a bug, but I created a document with images and captions. Theses captions are actually text frames with custom “list” to get the numbering working and taken in consideration every time I create a new text frame (continuous numbering).

The problem is, that when I group the image with the text frame, and then anchor the group to the text, the number of the caption change. For example, if i have Caption N° 11 grouped with an image then anchored to text, the number goes from 11 to 4 with no reason … The first three images are grouped with their captions and anchored to the text but that works fine… I have recorded my screen, please see here: https://youtu.be/Ftjgcx1Fn5E

      Any ideas? Thank you.

What is the 11 referencing in this caption?

Thank you for the reply Skemicle, but I don’t really understand your question :3
11 is the number of the current Caption, there are 11 images, going from 1 to 11, in the video I’ve added the 11th image with the 11th caption.

it looks as if you have the numbering set to continue from previous and the 4 is a continuation of the chapter number. I’m assuming you are using the chapter numbering in this same way, and you are wanting to restart the figure numbers after each new chapter and continue the image numbering throughout the document? I don’t know if there is a way to do this.

I believe this happens because InDesign assigns automatic numbering in a certain order: by date. Meaning that the latest text frame created gets assigned the latest number. So for example, when you created the last text frame for “No. 11” that frame was the ‘youngest’ text frame to be created so it got assigned the latest number, in this case ’11’.

But when you anchor it into an old text frame that is ‘living’ on the page for a longer period of time, the anchored text frame inherits the age attribute from the ‘parent’ text frame to which it is anchored to, In this case ‘4’. Because the parent text frame was probably created right after the text box with the “No. 3” was created.

This is only a theory that I thought of and might be wrong, but it makes sense to me.

Hello David and thank you for the reply, but it does not help … I can’t see the layers of multiple pages on the layer panel, so it’s not working… Have you a walkaround for that? Thanks in advance

Oh, sorry, I did not see the movie before. Now I see the problem: When you anchor the group, it takes on the order of the text frame. You need to anchor all the figures, or none of them.

My guess is that your figures 5, 6, 7 are all not anchored in the story yet.

Hmm, that’s too complex… I can’t anchor all of the images, because some of them are on separate pages without that does not contain any text except the caption…
I’ve figured out another problem: when I try to put the chapter number in caption (exemple: Chapter III: Figure 3 – 1), that does not work with ^H, because the chapters paragraph styles are not on the same list, that’s too strange, i don’t know what to do.
