Can't generate index in InDesign CS5

I'm attempting to generate an index that a client created in MS Word. When I get into the Index panel menu and select Topic, all of the client's entries appear as they should. However, when I try to generate the index, I get a frame with the “Index” heading and no entries.

When I check “Include Empty Index Selections,” I get the alphabet headings and still no actual entries.

The fact that the entries appear correctly in the Index panel Topic menu itself implies that the markers imported correctly from Word. Any idea what's going wrong?

It sounds like perhaps the topics came over from word, but the actual index markers didn't. Do the index topics in the index panel have triangles next to them, so you can open them and see page numbers?

Triangles: yes. Page numbers: no. When I click the triangles, they give me the subtopics, but no numbers associated with them.

Is there a way to fix this?

Check to make sure the index markers are really there and working in Word. Perhaps import as docx instead of doc? Or vice versa? Or RTF? Make sure Import Options is set up properly (turn on in Place dialog box). Hard to know.

Yes, there are index markers in the Word .docx file, but they don't show up in the InDesign file. (No idea why the Index feature detects words without page numbers instead of nothing at all.) The Import options are set up properly, with index text checked.

If I change the original Word document from .docx to either .doc or .rtf and import it, some of the markers show up in the InDesign text, but not all. Here's a sample of what I get when I try to generate the index from the new InDesign file:

      B

      backache

      lower back injury

      Backache 49

      bedridden by

      lower back injury

      lumbago

      Bladder

      renal failure

      Blood pressure

      lowered 21

So, something is going wrong during import. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks for your previous replies, BTW. I still don't know exactly what's going wrong, but at least this narrows it down. :)

Try looking through the story in the story editor (Edit > Edit in Story Editor). Look for index markers where they're supposed to be. Just more ideas for troubleshooting. Good luck!

Good thought. The markers aren't in the story editor either.

It's looking like I'm simply going to have to insert those markers by hand. While this doesn't make me happy, I feel better about doing it if I know I'm not missing an obvious easier solution. And at least I didn't have to sit on the phone for 5 hours with 8 different Adobe tech support people who couldn't help me.

      Hello Susan,
can you send me the word document (or part of it). I’m really curios – because I really want to know as much as possible about indexing in InDesign and Word. And that sounds wired.
In case I might find the issue – I’ll let you know.

      Hi Jeldrik,

It's our client's manuscript, not ours, so we can disseminate it. I would if I could!

Oops. That should be “we CAN'T disseminate it.”
