It would seem like I should be able to apply a drop style just like I do with a paragraph style or a character style. However I don't see anywhere to go to reapply drop caps. Therefore I recreate the drop cap every time I need to use it (except for the character style that it is based on, that I simply reapply.) The biggest problem I see with doing this is what if I want to change all those drop caps later on? I wouldn't want to go back and change them all one at a time.

?? Drop caps are defined in your paragraph style, and that's where you set how large it should be. In addition, you can optionally have it apply a character style automatically. Then use this paragraph style on each paragraph where you want the drop cap to appear in.

If you want to change it later on, change its size in the paragraph style, or its appearance in the character style.

Ok, I understand now. I was reading “Real World Indesign” and they tell you to set up the drop cap as a character style then go to the paragraph panel to “drop caps and nested styles.” When done this way it doesn't save it as a paragraph style and when it doesn't save it as a paragraph style you can't reapply it. I guess I got confused when there were two ways to get to “drop caps and nested styles” and one way doesn't save it as a paragraph style.

Thanks for the help, this my first time using InDesign for making a book. The past few years I have only been using it for simple things like flyers and posters.

Ah, I get it — RWI shows you how to do it once, not as part of a style.

Yup: the disadvantage of that method is twofold. First, you cannot edit the property globally, and second, you get a '+' added to that paragraph, showing it has local formatting.
