Hi, One issue I come up against whilst laying out books to baseline grids is how to deal with grid alignments when headings have a size close to or larger than the leading and take up more than one line.

In many cases I can sove this using line styles and different leading for different lines in conjunction with the leading as first baseline in a text box. However in some cases this does not work.. so the question is..

Can I use a grep style to define custom leading based on position on the page.. ie can I apply custom leading to characters with a particular heading para style that apeear at the top of a text frame?

      thanks

      Short answer: No.

GREP is not magic, it's a simple text pattern matching system. And it uses a pretty narrow definition of 'text' as well — it's not aware, for example, of InDesign's line endings inside a paragraph, and so stuff like “pages” or “text frames” are totally out of its scope.

For something this complicated and specific you could look into TeX, it might be possible after a couple of years of intensive studying.

Might be faster to learn about setting up and not breaking grids?

Thanks for the comments guys.. sounds like I'm going to have to do it manually

I am a big fan of sticking strictly to the grid but this particular design was inherited and I am trying to tidy it up..

In this case the leading is 14pt and I need 5 different sized headings between 24pt and 11pt (size of body text).. This means you innevitably end up with one heading at around 16-18pt which if it turns over needs leading at least equivalent too its size..

Perhaps this kind of issue will be solved with object styles in forthcoming releases
