Is there any way to sync anchored objects so editing one will update them all? The aim is to anchor an object that was created and grouped in inDesign CS6.

I thought “Place and Link” would be the solution but the content placer tool won’t click [to place a ‘loaded’ object] inside the text.

Object styles aren’t quite doing it either. I emphasize ‘grouped’ because using an object style to position the anchored+grouped item seems to break the object style connection to each of its elements. That is, once you apply a style to the group (to set anchor position), you can no longer modify the object style (eg. for drop shadow color) of an individual element to update/change it inside all the grouped objects.

Basically, I’m looking for a Photoshop-style inDesign Smart Object. Help!

As you’ve noticed, “Place and Link” won’t paste into a text frame directly. You have to place on the pasteboard, cut, and paste just as you must do in the original.

The trick with Object Styles inside a group that has its own Object Style is to group first, then apply Object Styles to the individual elements. If you do it the other way round, the Object Style you apply to the group will cancel out individual Object Styles applied to the elements inside it.

Any changes to one of the grouped elements will be reflected in the placed copies, such as when you replace an image, but there’s a big caveat. The styles of the receiving document rule under normal circumstances (that’s a feature, not a bug!), so a style change in the original won’t necessarily reflect in the copy. How these various items interact is a bit complicated, so the best reference to go by is the InDesign Help page on Place and Link.

Alan. You solved my problem in the first paragraph; added an alternate solution (just for variety) in the second; and threw in a Masterclass on the general subject matter in the third.

      Wow. Thank-You-Thank-You-Thank-You (for all three)!
