      Hi,

I’ve recently converted an InDesign document from its print format to an fixed layout EPUB. In the print version we had straight quotes for the inch symbol, but when that text was copied to the EPUB format all the straight quotes were converted to smart quotes and had to be individually replaced from the Glyphs panel. I was also unable to place that glyph on the clipboard.

Is this a know limitation, or have I failed to understand how I should have proceeded. If it’s a feature that will be added in a future rev, can I add my plea to its speedy implementation.

      Regards,

      John

What does this mean: “but when that text was copied to the EPUB format”

Are you saying you copied/pasted text to a new INDD file?

If so I’m guessing your prefs in the target file are set to create typographer quotes. (Preferences > Type > Use Typographer’s Quotes). That is the default setting.

The answer is to make sure the target document has the option disabled before pasting in something with straight quotes.

Also, if the deed is done already ;-) you can use Find/Change to find curly quotes and replace with straight quotes … in the Find field, click the flyout menu of the special characters and choose Quotation Marks > Straight Single (or Double).

        Hi Anne-Marie,

Thank you for the suggestion to clear the preference for typographer’s quotes. I should have looked for that.

In the CS5 version I thought we could type Opt-Cmd-Shift-” to change that preference, but that didn’t work for me with InDesign CC 2015.

The only way I could get the inch mark was to go to the Glyphs panel after selecting the Typographer’s ” and double click the Glyph. I copied that Glyph but it would not paste so there may be another setting that I’ve overlooked.

        Regards,

        John
