      Hi there

I have just been given a new project, to typeset an A5 book using Calibri font at 12pt, justified text, with no hyphenation.

I have never worked with this font before, can anybody make a suggestion for the justification settings?

      Thanking you kindly!

justification is really an aesthetic task, so it’s hard to give suggestions. That said, I find Calibri always too “open/loose.” So I would change the settings in the paragraphs style to something like
      Wordspacing 80/95/133
      Letterspacing -3/-2/0
      Glyph scaling 98/100/102

      Brilliant David!

      I’ll give that a try!

      Thanks again, your’e a legend!

So i gave your suggestion a try and it looks great!

I also found your article “What Are Your Favorite Word and Character Space Settings for H&Js?” very useful as well.

Thank you so much for all your help!

This website and forum is so helpful, useful and informative!

      You guys are awesome!

      Hi there David

I wondered if i might be able to help me? I recently downloaded called Amiri: https://www.amirifont.org for my English transliteration of Arabic.

There seem to be a fair amount of ligatures and stuff, but I’m not sure about the kerning etc. Being a novice I wondered, if you didn’t mind, could i tap your expertise and get your assessment of it? Maybe you could make some suggestions in regards to justification and so on?

      Thank you so much!

Andy, hopefully I am wrong, but will all of your tinkering with word and letterspacing not be rendered completely moot with “justified text, with no hyphenation”?

In my professional opinion, there is NO WAY you can use the phrases ‘nice spacing’, ‘justification’, and ‘no hyphenation’ together in a single sentence. I.e., pick 2 — any 2 — but then forget about the 3rd one.

Hi Theunis. I am not a professional, just a novice so, thank you so much for your comments, i value your opinion and experience and will add it to my slowly increasing knowledge base.

But, the suggestions that David made were excellent and have made a real difference to the way the text looks on the page. I have had to make the odd manual hyphenation here and there, but not many and on the whole i have managed to stick to the project remit successfully.

      Thanks and best wishes

      Andy
