Hi all, I got an interesting question from one of my colleagues working on a book document. Each Indesign file in the book document restarts it’s numbering. Some of the files have different numbering styles like roman numerals. Is there an easy way (without exporting the book to PDF) to see the total or absolute number of pages in the book document? I know you can set this in the preferences (first option in the general section > absolute numbering) for an individual file that uses sections with different numbering styles. But can you do this in the book panel?

      Things we tried:
We tried running preflight on the book to see if the report displayed the total number.
We tried the preference option and opened the last file in the book but alas.
We looked at all the options in both the book panel and the pages panel.
We opened the info panel and selected files in the book panel > no info

      Any ideas anyone?

Michael, if I have understood it right, you want to know the total number of pages in a book. Well to my knowledge, this feature is still unavailable in InDesign.

      According to David’s findings:
“I’d like the Book palette to display total number of pages in the book. (Intro chapters are in roman numerals, then chapter 1 starts on page 1, so trying to figure out the total number of pages requires keeping a calculator open.)”

Hope Adobe will do it someday…

Mmmm … I’m afraid I’ll have to agree with Masood on this.

There are still a few glitches when working with book files it seems. E.g. using the “Last Page Number” text variable, that one also doesn’t pick up the last page number.

Yeah, you can kind of find out like this: https://creativepro.com/type-the-page-number-book.php
but that doesn’t give you the actual number of pages.
Could easily be done with a script, though, I believe.

hey Masood, Bart and the great Mr. Blatner,

I wil try out the cross-reference method with my colleague. And maybe look for a script since I am not very well versed in writing scripts myself.
      Thank you for your time.
