Book and automatic chapter numbering within a paragraph style

I am working with a book and several documents in it. My titles in my documents are numbered automatically with a paragraph style. My first document in the book is indicated as a style source. The problem is that every document starts numbering from 1. I can change that in each document manually within the paragraph style (bullets and numbering/Numbering style/Mode Start at X. But each time I synchronise my book, the chapters in each document starts with 1. What am I overlooking?
      Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Ann, normally you can choose how the numbering performs in the option-menu of the Books-window. By default the numbering is continued on the next document. Check it out!

Hi Marc, Continue from previous document is already selected. Any thoughts?

‘Numbering is continued on the next document’ is not an option. Don’t see it anywhere.

Ann, I was wrong. That option is for the page numbering. You have to adjust an option in the paragraph style. Go to ‘Bullets and Numbering” and create a new list for that style. A popup window appears, there you can choose wether the numbering should continue on the next story and documents in a book.

Just tried it, did not work. Damn, I’m already searching all day :-(
Too bad I can not send screenshot.

Don’t forget to update the numbering in the book-window.

      Yesss almost there.
My first document is a preface. From the second document the chapter numbering starts. But now it seems to start from the first document because chapter 2 is now ‘3’. You understand what I mean?

You have to create another paragraph-style for the preface with a new defined list. Copy the title style and only create a new list like you did before.

The preface document does not need any chapter numbering.

      SOLVED!! Thanks :-)
