I created a paperback book and uploaded it to CreateSpace. Book measures 6×9, it has bleeds. Facing pages. The PDF file measures 6.125″ x 9.25″ … Got it published, looks good.

NOW … I want to create a hardcover version. CreateSpace doesn’t do hardcover, LuLu does … Unfortunately, LuLu wants the book submitted with a 1/8″ inch bleed on ALL sides, as single pages NOT facing pages. That means the PDF must measure 6.25″ wide …

I’m trying to accommodate this revision, but if I deselect “Facing pages,” everything is out of whack. I created two master pages for left and right side headers and margins (I usually allow for more margin for the inside when using print-on-demand) … but when you deselect “Facing Pages,” it applies only ONE master page o everything (i.e. Right OR Left), but not both.

This is kind of driving me crazy. Is there a better method, short of just beginning a fresh InDesign file?

Don’t worry about the facing pages, just add the bleed as required in the export to PDF (1/8 inch on all sides) This will add the bleed.
The trim size will be the same just with 1/8 inch bleed all round.

All the pages will be single pages (don’t export spreads). View it in Reader and if you want tell it to display as Two-Up and probably Show Cover Page During Two-Up and you will see the pages with the bleed all round as spreads.

      Hi, Graham:

Thanks for your answer. That only solves part of the problem, though. I created a Left and Right master page. If I turn off “Facing Pages,” it applied the specs only for the Left master page. As a result, all of the page headers are off-center. I use .5″ off margin at top, bottom, and outside. For the INSIDE margin, I use .75″ margin. (A print-on-demand service like CreateSpace seems to require a larger interior margin). When I turn off facing pages, all my page folios shift (usually favoring the left).

If I don’t make some kind of adjustment to the graphic, then it just bleeds onto the next page as well. These pages were originally built for bleeds on three sides (which may not have been correct, but it worked well enough).

You should leave it set to Facing Pages, leave the bleed on top, bottom, and outside, and just export a PDF (set to Pages not Spreads, of course). Basically, probably the same as you did for Createspace. If the Lulu book will have facing pages (left and right), then you should not change your ID document to single sided. That is a mistake, no matter what printer you use. (Unless you are printing for spiral bound binding, or on single pages that will go into a binder, or something like that.)

      Hi, David …

      Thanks for the additional answer.

If I choose to unselect “Facing Pages” (which I won’t), every page adopts the margins of the RIGHT master page. The document doesn’t automatically reconfigure. I suppose (in the future) if I want non-facing pages, and a different master for L/R, that’s something that has to be initiated from the very beginning. I think CS5 might do this automatically but (alas) I am still working in CS3.

It’s getting a little bit frustrating to see the solutions for CS5 and up users … like driving a 1990s car while everyone has bluetooth and built-in GPS.

Rich: I know what you mean about seeing solutions for CS6 and CC users. But… well, times change. Sometimes you need to get the bluetooth. ;-)

On the facing pages thing… I don’t think this will help, but just in case:

      David …

I went ahead and turned off FACING PAGES … I made a master page for R and L hand pages. It was a little bit tedious … BUT … I used the script to adjust all the left hand pages … Then, in the “Pages” menu I selected the left hand pages (holding down CTRL) and applied the correct master page, to get the margins adjusted correctly. It added an hour onto the task, but the script you suggested (and the CTRL click and apply) really made the take easier.

      THANKS!
