Im new to InDesign and have one big question. Ive watched tutorials about setting up Bleed for pages in a booklet or brochure but no one addresses the part of what happens at the print shop when the actual printing takes place.

In InDesign, the bleed is set up on all 4 sides of a page both the cover and the facing pages. On the work area, the facing pages are put together side by side, but the cover and back cover left as separate pieces with no facing page next to it.

What happens when I place an image to fill the bleed area on the left side of the cover page? Does the printers software cut that off or does it get printed on the paper since the cover is only printed on the right side of a whole piece of paper (trimming off only the top, bottom and right side)?

I should mention I am trying to creat a half page booklet that will be printed on 8.5×11 paper and sending to Elite4Print.

Yeh you don't need to worry about it. The bleed on the cover will not appear on the back cover – the printers take care of this.

If you have any concerns ask your printers can you tag along for the first Prepress – the prepress operators will be able to demonstrate to you how it works – and it's a very valuable experience.

They may even be able to show you a few things to make the next time you send something for print run a bit smoother at prepress.

Don't be afraid to keep in contact with your printers and/or prepress and fire as many queries at them as you can BEFORE you send the artwork.

Keep in mind – that Prepress is an operation and usually only the processing of the job is Quoted for – if Prepress requires any additional fixes you MAY incur additional costs.

Talk to them – they'll be delighted that you did – and so will you.

Thank you for the info. The printing company is out of state for me and Ususally there has been no one to answer my question.

I will give em another call though now that I understand more of what to expect.

You actually do not need to bleed off that side of the page at all, when dealing with the first page that has no facing page.

But it's a good idea to bleed off that page anyway – as it gives the prepress wiggle room should they need to shift the cover a mm or 2mm for whatever reason.

But definitely give them a call. Skype them, video chat, as long as you're happy and they can help all the better.

Thanks Eugene. I just thought I would follow up on what happened.

This particular company said that for them, it was a good idea to leave it off because as you said “you dont actually need to bleed that side”.

      Thanks for the info.
