Black color is changing after export to high quality PDF

      Hi,

I have basic issue. When trying to export my photo album cover to High Quality Print PDF file, black color is changing into “very dark grey”. When using Smallest File Size default settings, black is… fine – like on screen. Other black items are fine (on RGB bitmaps) – no matter which setting is used.

Cover background is a black rectangle, created by rectangle tool (fill taken from swatches; CMYK 0,0,0,100%)

I’ve noticed interesting difference between these two default settings:

Hight Quality Print: No color conversion
Smallest File Size: Color conversion is Convert to Destination; Destination sRGB IEC61966-2.1

What setting should I use here? Would like to have best print quality and black to be black… not grey ;)

      Thanks in advance!
      Marcin

      Hi Marcin,

For creating a High Quality Print PDF, you can use the “High Quality Print” PDF preset. The “Smallest File Size” is mainly for proofing the file through emails. The Smallest File Size preset converts the Document to sRGB which is a monitor compatible colour profile.

      Hope that helps.

      Hi,

Thanks for response. I know that Smallest File Size is poor quality. My question was how to achieve same black color using High Print Quality. Why PDF using this preset contains dark grey instead of “real” black (like in Smallest File Size?

      Thanks

That is because of the Preferences settings in InDesign.

Preference > Appearance of Black > “Options for Black on RGB and Greyscale Devices”
This is the reason the Black color changes to Rich black when exported with Smallest Size preset. Every Black is changed to Rich Black for better view.

However, the High Quality preset knows the differences between Pure Black and Rich Black and keeps it separate.

      Thanks,
But… I’m still confused. Which black is real black when printing? Even if black is not deep black in PDF when using High Quality Print preset, printer will it turn it into “real” black?

Rich = deep black in Smallest file for better view
Pure = “dark grey” in High Quality Print However printer will print it correctly anyway?

When i was in the printing trade we used to make Rich Black as c20m40y40k100.
      Varies between printing presses.
