Better to break an 84pg doc into smaller chunks?

I have an 84 pg magazine and wonder if I should break it into smaller chunks — this used to be a problem in older versions of Quark but maybe InDesign 2017 handles it better. In other words, how many pages is it safe to work with in one document?

I do an 80 page flier with 5 different pricing version on layers and have no problems at all! I would leave it as is. How are you going to send it to press? As one giant .pdf or single pages?

I imagine as an individual pdf for each page — that’s what I did when I did this regularly, which was about 4 years ago. I’m taking over from a designer who left the company (I’m working remotely) and plan to ask the printer what they want. But from back then when I did this, I understood all printers wanted individual pdfs. Has that changed?

Please don’t make individual pages to send to the printer, one pdf with all the pages in will be far better for the printer – and definitely ask the printer for their preferred settings.
84 pages will probably be fine, if you find it slows down your computer then consider splitting it.

Thank you so much. That will be so much easier on me too. Time marches on, and progress happens. A very good thing.
