Best practices for working with graphs

Hi, Thanks for a wonderful site and community. I am a professional and in general a rather skilled user of InDesign (a great deal of thanks to InDesignSecrets for that) but there is one area where I have been searching for a better way and that is for dealing with graphs (charts).

My current workflow is entering the data in illustrator and then copying the graph from illustrator to indesign and fixing both the style of the graph and recreating the legend (pasting from illustrator screws up the legend created in illustrator, the text becomes outlined and I can not control the appearance of the lines).

What workflows to you have for working with graphs? Especially in annual reports, newspaper or something similar where the style is the same for many similar graphs. Something that would make this process quicker for me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help and hopefully the answers in this thread will benefit the whole community.
