Battling with Paragraph Styles

I'd consider myself a fairly competent designer (!) but one thing that drived me crazy is paragraph styles that refuse to apply themselves or apply with non-specified formatting. An example: I've created a document with various para styles. Then, some months down the track I decide re-use elements of this document for a new design but with different typefaces/leading etc. But for reasons I can't understand chaging the font in the para style doesn't apply itself the the text selected. I'm not doing fancy things like nesting styles (or at least I think I'm not!)

I have a hunch it has something to do with the 'based on/next style' but I could be wrong.

As you can see from the screenshot there is no way this para is in Times 6.5pt/8 leading (the 'new' style — it used to be Karbon) but rather it is now Gotham Condensed 6pt with 0 leading (no idea where that comes from).

      Am I being very dumb?!

Looks like you've applied a character style to the text too.

Even though you have a Paragraph Style selected, the Character Style will overrule it.

You shouldn't have Character Styles applied to entire paragraphs, you can to individual words within in the paragraph, or phrases, or even a sentence or two in the paragraph. But only to make it look different to the Paragraph style, like adding italics, or bold, superscript, etc.

Ideally you don't need to insert a Point or Leading size in the character style either. If you leave these blank – then it will use the setting in the Paragraph Style.
