      Hello everyone!

Here’s a little bit of context:

I have an InDesign file, where I created a front & back business card, each on it’s own page (front on page 1, back on page 2). Now I create another InDesign file where I will create the imposition for the printer. On the first A3 sized imposition page, I place the business card InDesign file, using the Show Options feature to place only the front. After I fill the page with about 24 instances of the front of the card, I put my crop marks and all and everything is ready.

Now I don’t want to do the same arranging process with the back, so I duplicate page 1, and now I have on page two everything set up, except I need the back of the card.

Here is where the problem lies:

How do I batch relink only the InDesign instances on page two?

      — You can’t use relink all instances in the links panel because it will also relink the ones on page 1.
      — If you select all the linked instances on page two and hit relink, it will not do this in a batch, but rather make you go through the same steps that are required to relink a file (go find it, hit OK, go find it, hit OK…. for every selected instance)
      — Also, selecting show options even when relinking all the instances of a file, will force you to go through the dialog box for every instance, so if you have a multiple page document that you need page 2 from, you will do some clickin’

I found the very nice rePlace script, but it works for individual instances, not batches (you can’t ask much from a two lines script, which, don’t get me wrong, does it’s job perfectly).

I know InDesign isn’t an imposition software, but this little quirk I came across is really interesting and I would love to hear your ideas. Just to reiterate:

How do you BATCH relink ONLY SOME instances of a file placed multiple times? And to go even further, how do you batch relink only some instances of a file placed multiple times, replacing them with another page of the SAME file. (The second question includes the relink all instances with show options checked problem too)

Sorry for the long post, I’m a long time fan of these forums and of the site.

      Kind regards!
