This has become the MOST FRUSTRATING thing ever. Pleeeeeease help us :)

Each month we create a newsletter and then we brand it for our various clients – each client getting a different header/footer on all the pages. So we created MasterPages for each client, and when it comes time to export, we apply the Client Master Pages to the content pages and export for each client separately.

However, we have SO many problems with this because inevitably SOMETHING changes in the process. And I am determined to figure out why.

I wish I could show you pix but I’ll describe it:
There’s a blue rectangle at the bottom of the page, and some text on top of the rectangle.

When we apply a client’s master page, BAM – The blue rectangle gets PUSHED DOWN for no apparent reason.

I have investigated all of the master pages. There are no extra pieces of anything. Yet all of the master pages are doing this and I can’t figure out why.

I’ve looked at the layers situation – there’s nothing weird about how the layers are set up. I’ve even tried locking the content layer but this still occurs.

      WHY does this happen?

The only way I’ve found to stop it is to GROUP everything in that section on the page before applying the masters.

But I’m trying to understand why this would happen?

Where should I look for anomalies? Would there be something about the grid or baseline grid I should check on the master pages vs the content pages? Is there some check mark somewhere I’m not thinking of?

I just am totally baffled since there’s NOTHING in the middle of the Master Pages that would be affecting the colored box like that.

ANY ideas at all would be greatly appreciated!!!

Is it only the blue rectangle that get’s shoved down? Does the text move with the rectangle?

Would it be possible to upload the doc somewhere?

In this particular file it is just the rectangle that gets shoved down. In another document a text box gets shoved to the right margin. It’s VERY ODD.

And fun fact, yesterday I tried creating a brand new Master Page — not based on any others, just new, blank, nothing on it. And when I applied it to the regular page, IT DID THE SAME THING.

      So……………. lol

I will ask about uploading the documents. We’ll need to clean out the obvious client data before doing so.

It’s not just you . . . I have had some weird things happen with solid black boxes on the header of a master page that behaved erratically on the document pages. I was in a hurry so I just deleted it from the master and applied it to the pages manually, but that was a quick fix for a once-a-year publication. I didn’t feel like documenting it at the time.

Sounds like a bug in the newer versions of InDesign. Have you found anything on the Adobe forums about anyone else experiencing this?

Our office is still on CS5 :(

So far, I have found NOTHING about this and you’re the first person I’ve found with anything similar. It’s making me want to bang my head on the wall because we go through this every single month, some problem arises with the content shifting as we create the branded files for our clients, and I’m trying to figure out how we can make this whole process simpler and less headache-y.

Right now we’re just going to group everything on the pages before applying the Masters, but this still doesn’t explain WHY it was happening or say if there’s a better way to prevent weirdness from happening again in the future, ya know? :-/
