Our department is in the midst of switching from Quark to InDesign, and with those changes comes the possibility of changing how we publish our pdfs online. Right now, our web department is taking the pdf published by quark, turning it into a swf (i think) and manually adding all of the hyperlinks to where the product is sold on our website. There are about 480 items in a standard book so this takes a decent amount of time, about 12 hours. here's an example of how our catalogs are published now if you want to have a look.

What i'm wondering is if there would be a fast way to search for the item# lines and automatically hyperlink it to the proper place on our website, images are also named by their product number, so i'm thinking it may be possible to do the same with the images as well. Does anyone have any thoughts on how we could do this faster either in Acrobat or InDesign?

You might want to pay a visit to the scripting forum. This sounds like something that could be scripted.

I'll be doing something similar at my work soon and found an ID script which will add hyperlinks to text based off a .txt file.

Let us know if you figure out something for the image links.
