      Hi,

Not new to this site but new to this forum, just wonder if I can ask 2 questions here.

I am using CS2 at work. Recently I have to do a 30 odd pages documents with 3 chapters, since it's just around 30 pages no reason to create a book. However, I need to set up automatic numbering for graphs in each chapter, so chapter 1 has Figure 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and so on…, chapter 2 has Figure 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 and so on…, the problem is, how can I get the numbering update automatically so that when it reaches a new chapter it will renumber the way I want? ^H in the bullet & numbering panel doesn't work because everything is in one document, I tried with sections, no use. In the end I created 3 different paragraph styles. But is there a way to achieve the same results with just one style (and one list)?

The next problem I ran into was graphs. I read online we can copy and paste graphs and charts directly from word/excel (if quality isn't that vital) I did the same. However when I looked closer at the pasted graphs in InDesign I found all data along the x-axis was gone. Pasting from word into Illustrator CS3 yielded the same result. Again in the end I still used illustrator to convert all graphs to AI for import. Just wonder if there is a quicker way or if I didn't do something…

      Thanks!!!

re: numbering. Check out this blog post on the topic: https://creativepro.com/multi-level-automatic-numbering-in-indesign.php

The quick version is that you will need at least two different styles (one for each 1.x, which restarts the numbering as part of the style definition.)

re: graphs. This is a perpetual problem. I don't know where you read that you can copy and paste graphs, but I hope it wasn't on this site. Copy and paste is not a good idea. Save as PDF/EPS and open in Illustrator for fixup.

      Hi David,

Thanks!!!!!! It works now! Funny thing is I read this blog post before but somehow didn't get a grasp of it. Now that I understood the whole ideas behind it is actually quite straightforward.

Regarding the copy and paste thing, I read about it in a lot of web pages but they are about copying/importing directly from Excel, I just tried the same with Word, maybe that was the problem. Admittedly I was looking for a shortcut to deal with some not-very-important documents (but require quick turnaround).

      Thanks again!!
