Automatic numbering

      I need to change the sequence of numbers often in my maps. For example, I number 1-20 and each number has a designation (ie, Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc.). Currently, if one number needs to be deleted (ie. 12 – Chicago), then I need to ‘manually’ update/change/alter all numbers that come after that deletion. Is there a way to ‘automate’ this so if one number is deleted, all following numbers/locations change to the correct number? Does that make sense? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
