Since I barely have any coding skills (especially in java) and since it was holiday time on InDesign secret forum :) (a way to say my post felt a bit lonely for a few days while the issue was vivid in my mind), I reached out to Kasyan for a custom created script.
We worked back and forth to discuss the issue and the final script matches the character style from a document (the index) to a character style found in multiple documents (consisting of roman numeral references for an introductory document and plain numbering for the main document).
The script relates the “source” value to an “anchor” of equal value and creates a hyperlink name after the “source”. (there also is gradual naming if a second hyperlink relates to the same anchor from a different indexed entry).
I am very happy with the script, it will save us many hours of monkey tasking.
On the large scale test, this project resulted in the maping of 1468 hyperlinks in about 40 min (…25 min on his computer)
I recommend Kasyan for his professionalism, skills and round the clock availability.
