Auto Pagination and Master Page(s) Problem

      I am having problems with getting a book to autopaginate. I created an A master and then a B master based on the A master for the first page of every new chapter. Every new chapter is setting its start page number to 1, even though I have set the numbering to auto page numbering (please excuse me if my terminology is a little “off”, I am using an English version of InDesign, but my menus are in Japanese due to the OS settings). The page number text variable for the A master page is A and for the B master page based on the A master is B. I am also using a template for all the files if that makes any difference.

      Does anyone have any insight on what is causing the pagination problem??
