I have a 194 page book that I need to export to Epub. I’ve watched all of Anne-Marie’s videos on Lynda.com but I have run into a problem that doesn’t seem to appear there. All of my pages from Chapter 1 to the end are part of one long text flow. I have a series of 10 individual photos (with separate text boxes with their captions) right in the middle of the book (between Chapter 5 and Chapter 6. I was able to make this work just fine for the print version by just making 5 empty spreads between those two chapters and “placing” the pictures – one of each page. I learned from Anne-Marie’s video how to group each picture and caption and go to the Object Export Options and rasterize them and add an Alt tag to each. However, when I export to ePub, they all end up at the end of the book. I thought I would be able to use the Articles Panel and just put in the first 5 Chapters and then my 10 groups of Objects and then add the remaining chapters. However, because the text is all part of the text flow, it all goes in as one Article and there is no way to split it out so that I can add my images. I have tried to split my text flow to end at the end of Chapter 5 but I seem to be doing something wrong because I just can’t get it to split. When I double click on the out port at the end of Chapter 5 and hit delete, it takes all the text away. Then I try to place those last 5 chapters into a new text frame and flow it to the end but it comes out still as one long flow.

I thank anyone who can help with this. I’m fairly new to InDesign but I am trying to learn how to use this for eBooks and other than this one problem, I’m enjoying the process and the program.

If the entire book comprises of one long text flow, in order for the group (images and caption) to appear at the right place in text flow, you can make make the group inline(after setting it to rasterise from Object Export Options).

Yes, you could just anchor those groups one after the other in an empty paragraph(s) in the story, where you want them to appear.

Or, you can break a long threaded story manually:

      1. Select the frame which you want to be the final one of the first part of the story.
      2. Click once on its Outport lower right. You should have a loaded cursor with a chain icon on it.
      3. Click once anywhere *inside* the same frame. The Outport should now show an overset. The single set of threaded frames is now two sets of threaded frames.
      4. With the Type cursor, click an insertion point after the last character in that same frame. (I would normally click after the last full word, or full paragraph, for a better break.)
      5. Press Command-Shift-End (Control-Shift-End on Windows) to select all the text after your cursor, including the overset text.
      6. Choose Edit > Cut. The overset icon should change to an empty Outport, indicating it’s the last frame of the story.
      7. Click an insertion point in the first frame of the other series of threaded frames, which should be empty of text.
      8. Choose Edit > Paste. The text should flow into the threaded frames.

Now you can insert blank pages in between the 2 halves of the story to place your images, and/or you can drag the images into the Articles panel between the two “halves” of the story.

      Anne-Marie,
Thank you for replying. I have been trying really hard to learn all the in’s and out’s and InDesign but it is not easy. I am still in a leaning mode and I don’t know what I would do without your lessons on Lynda.com and then here at indesignsecrets.com. I’m not at a place right now where I can test your answer. Not that I doubt your answer, I just doubt my ability to work correctly with text flow – it has haunted me on more than one occasion. I’m doing better every day so I’m hoping I will be able to make this work. I love the Articles panel but it is not great when text flow is at work. However, text flow sometimes saves the day so I can’t complain too much about it. I love watching your videos but I do sometimes wish there was a way to do a hands-on training class. I’ve been looking for help in my area of the country but haven’t found anyone yet. Many thanks to you and David and everyone else who offers help – it’s a great program.

I have a long book with roughly 30 chapters including many anchored photos…that ive been able to export successfully to epub using articles panel to manage ordering…everything compiles nicely except the first chapter…after the first page of that chapter, the rest of the pages for that chapter do not appear…it goes directly to chapter 2 which is complete and correct…as is the rest of the book…

I havnt yet cracked open the epub to look at the code, but when i do..what should i be looking for?

      Thanks,

      J

Just a note to others…i finally figured out the problem…i had inadvertently rasterized a whole page using the object export function…. And as soon as i cracked open the epub, i saw it immediately…
