KeymasterPlease let me know if you're seeing math puzzles down below, when you try to reply to posts on this forum. They're not supposed to be there! I can't see them. We thought we turned them off for everyone, but we're hearing notices that some people do find they need to do that simple math captcha before they can post or reply.
If you are seeing math puzzles when trying to post or reply, please reply below and tell us what web browser and OS you're using.

MemberSo what the problem with the math? If someone has problems getting the right answer, well, both Mac and Windows have a calculator
This one is “The sum of 3+3″ — perhaps you could make 'em a bit more difficult, these are no fun at all …
(Windows XP, SP3, IE 8 )
(It's not there when editing a post, I notice.)

MemberWell I have over 50 posts and they are getting harder.
11 + 5 for this one
another one earlier was 15 + 12.
Perhaps when we get to 100 posts it will be like 25 + 35 and such like.
Not looking forward to reaching 1000 posts, the questions will be quite difficult then.

MemberBoy that is weird. We're looking into it.
In the meantime remember if you can't figure out the math problem, just use one of InDesign's X or Y fields ;-)

KeymasterKris, Eugene, and eelco: Please let me know what browser and OS you're using.
If you log out and log back in (to this site), does that help?
Theun: The problem with the math is that it's annoying and slows people down… the captcha was originally set up to avoid spam, but it's not relevant because you have to be logged in to post. If you're logged in already, why force people to do math?
(Besides, since I do all my basic math in InDesign now, my brain has atrophied.)

I logged out and back in with Safari 4.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.6.2 – the math is still there. I'll check it out from Firefox now…

Now posting from IE 8.0.7600.16385 on Windows 7 – math is still there.
I'd say it's not browser- or platform-related. David, let me know if you want it, and I'll e-mail you my account and password details, so you can try it out as 'RorohikoKris' from your end – that might shed some light. If you don't see the math while being me, maybe there is some geolocation in the play. If you do see the math – you've got something to debug things with.
E-mail me direct if you want it!
Cheers,
Kris

MemberI'm using Firefox 3.5.5 on a Mac w/Snow Leopard (10.6.1). And I still get the math thing. For some reason I was logged out and had to log in. But I logged out again and logged back in and the math thing is still there.
As an aside, I have to figure out 2 + 4 :( :D

KeymasterOkay, thanks everyone. The answer is that it does not appear to have anything to do with the web browser or OS. It has something bizarrely to do with the user account. We'll figure it out… unfortunately, Pariah (who has set up most of this for us) is on holiday so we probably can't change it for another week or so. Sorry!

MemberI still get 'em. And who stretched the screen??? Someone posted something that really stretched it. I've got a 23-inch display and I've gotta scroll sideways to read this thread.

MemberThe stretched screen is simply due to the wide images that have been posted in this thread. :)

MemberThat was my first thought, adamjury. But I've been to sites where something as simple as a space band in front of a new paragraph caused it.

KeymasterYes, it was Kris' really wide image. I manually edited the HTML width tag and it's better now. We'll try to find a way to manage that automatically in the future.

KeymasterAnyone still seeing math captchas? Do you have to do math to post or reply to posts? We updated our forum software and we're hoping that made the problem go away.

MemberGone for me too – but now I have another problem.
This is the second time today that I've attempted to write in the forum, from two different computers, using Firefox latest edition.
Both times the forum has locked me out of my Keyboard, i.e., I can't type anything at all, not even in the URL area.
I reckon it's the forum because it's the second time it's happened, on two different computers, and the keyboard becomes active again once I hit a button in the toolbar for replying to posts, like “B” “I” “U” etc.
Weird – any ideas what's going on now?

MemberJust tested it again, as soon as I reply to a post the keyboard is frozen out?
However, it's not frozen out in Internet exporer, so seems to be limited to firefox, using XP and Vista. It also only seems to be a problem when replying to posts, editing posts is fine.
And the forum is going extremely slow too – the latest Forum topics are no longer listed on the main forum page either? It's just each sub-forum that's listed:

KeymasterThe stretched out page numbers are a feature, not a bug. Though personally I think it's a bug. I don't know why it does that.
We upgraded the forum software on Saturday, and that fixed some problems, but it seems to have generated others for a few people. Eugene, I have no idea why it would have that effect on your computer. Is anyone else having problems typing, or with very slow response?

MemberHi David, it doesn't seem to happen all the time, which suggest to me it's a lag in loading the page that the browser freezes. Given that it's happening on two computers with XP and the other with Vista, I can only think that it's something to do with how the forum is loading or when the Post Reply loads sometimes.
I don't really know – I can only offer my observations. I'll keep an eye on it – it could have easily been something else entirely.

MemberThat is weird, Eugene.
It's funny, though, that I had as similar experience today with Facebook. I could type into it, but not click any buttons like Share, Comment, and so on. This was in Firefox 3.5.7 on XP. Facebook worked great on the same computer with every other browser (Opera, Chrome, Safari, IE, etc.). I restarted Firefox a couple of times, at which point I couldn't even type into Facebook. An hour later, it worked again.
Both Facebook and this forum are powered heavily by JavaScript. I wonder if Firefox is experiencing issues running JavaScript lately.

MemberI haven't noticed any update to firefox, and I update manually as a creature of habit lol – what does that even mean?
I don't know Pariah, seems to be limited to Firefox so – I wonder what could cause it, haven't noticed it anywhere else. And I read earlier the site was updated on Saturday. I don't know what it is Pariah, but I'll try to keep a log or something and see if regular paterns show up. Hopefully it's only temporary.
Note: Didn't happen as I wrote this message – so I'll keep invesigating.
