Anchored object settings for text frames anchored inside other text frames

Hey, y’all! What anchored object settings do you normally use for text frames anchored inside other text frames? How do you achieve consistent spacing around the anchored text frames?

A little background: I’m working on a document that has a lot of “Note” boxes to call out important information. I made them with an object style (with rules, background color, insets, etc.) applied to text frame, which I then anchor in the body text frame. I’m getting erratic results for the spacing above and below the anchored frames. I tried above-line options, but I wanted them to have their own spacing, rather than taking on the spacing of the paragraph style of its anchor. So I gave the anchored frames their own paragraph and paragraph style with auto-leading set to 100% and my desired space before and after. But the space before and after is still inconsistent. It’ll be the correct height in the body, for example, but seem to collapse when preceding a heading. So I’m trying to figure out if I’m just setting it up wrong.

Make sure that the “Pilcrow” (paragraph mark) has your desired style/spacing settings applied to it.

Also check that your anchored object ignores text wraparound and the enclosing text frame doesn’t have settings different to other text frames.

Thanks for your response, Steve. I checked the pilcrow and style, and we’re good there. There’s nothing special about the enclosing text frame, either. Regarding text wrap, I can’t have the anchored object ignore it, because there’s a little flag shape anchored inside it and the text has to flow around it. I did try turning it off and on, and it seemed to have no effect on the spacing outside. What was your concern when you mentioned ignoring text wraparound?

Does the text align to the baseline grid?

      Maybe share something visual?
Alternatively, try paragraph shading instead to achieve the same result.

      Here’s an example. https://imgur.com/a/4jyM6t5

First image: The paragraph style for the “Note” box has only autoleading and 13 pt before and 13 pt after applied.

The body style has 0 pt before, 6.5 pt after. The heading with yellow rule has 6.5 pt before, 10 pt after. So it seems that the space between the note box and the yellow rule heading should be larger than the space between the note box and the following body paragraph, but it’s actually smaller for some reason. To Dieter’s question, I’m [shamefully] not using baseline grids, so that shouldn’t be the issue.

Third image: If I decrease the space before and after the note box to 6.5 pt, the distance between the yellow rule heading increases instead of decreasing.

Second image: I can increase the size of the space after to 80 pt, and it’s way too small. It’s really weird—I adjust it, and the spacing jumps in increments of the leading of the paragraph below. The spacing above the yellow rule heading is the same when the space after the note box is set to 11, 27, 43, 59, etc. (its leading is 16 pt), up until about 90 pt. The spacing above the body is the same in increments of 13 (its leading).

The paragraph shading is a good suggestion, but I sometimes have content with mixed paragraph styles in these boxes, so I’d prefer to do it with the anchor if possible.

I did a very fast and furious tryout, I think it will work because it’s not a box but para shading.

Thanks so much, Steve! I appreciate the “fast and furious” proof of concept. Paragraph shading may work for my needs, and I’ll give it a shot, though I still wish I knew what the heck is going on with my anchored objects.

Alternatively, I want to use anchored objects for Premade DropCaps (they’re illustrations) … they’re the same height and width, but if I haven’t worked on this series in a few months, I often forget how to do it and the settings.

Aren’t there settings (like a style menu) for anchored objects? Seems like I’m always starting from scratch, and a style menu-type setting would save a huge amount of time.

Settings are saved automatically after binding to the object.
