Cookbook. Recipes contained to one page each. Headnote is in column A aligned to baseline grid. 10 point font, 12 point leading. Recipe is in column B not aligned to grid, same font, 11 point bold, auto leading, multiple styles (Ingredient header, ingredient list, Instructions header, instructions in numbered list, etc.)

All is well except for the recipes that are too long for one column. Those I move under the headnote in column A. Two different text frames. Column A recipe frame threaded to column B recipe frame. Obviously, the lines of text don’t always align. See example here.

I played around with the text frame option for custom baseline grid, but either did it wrong or it’s not the right choice.

      Thoughts? TIA…

What you’re trying to do is difficult, because you have all kinds of leading and spacing going on. First of all, I would strongly suggest using split or span columns instead of trying to thread to a new frame. I’ll put links below on how to do that.
But even then, you’re going to have a challenge. Let’s say your leading is set to 12 points for your Instructions, and 10 points for the introduction text. The only way you could make them align is if you put 2 points of space between the paragraphs of the introduction, right? Because 10 + 2 = 12. Alignment is all about math… the leading + space before + space after must always equal the basic leading value (or a divisor of it).

Or two text boxes, one with a custom baseline?

Thanks, gentlemen. I assumed it would be a challenge at best, at worst impossible. Fortunately, the percentage of recipes where this is a problem is in the low single digits and this is my own product, so I can live with it as is if I have to, but I’ll keep playing around with it per your suggestions. Thanks again.

Julia Child is looking on disdainfully about your “gentlemen” comment… ;-)

I don’t get it… did Julia Child not approve of the word “gentlemen”?
