Is there a way for InDesign object alignment to work like Illustrator? In Illustrator you can select your objects and then click on the reference object to align things based off of the reference object position.

In InDesign both (all) objects move when using the align center comand. Or if you have an object (square) positioned on the right side of the page and you have another obejct (circle) to the left of it that you want aligned to the left edge of the square you need to move the circle passed the left edge of the square and then select the 2 objects and align left so that the square stays in its desired position and the circle is aligned to its left edge.

The smart guides help but I would work faster if it could work like Illustrator.

      Any suggestions?

      Thanks,
      Phil

      Hi Phil,

Lock the object you want to use for position. The locked object will not move and the other objects will align to it.

      Joe,

Once I lock the object, I am unable to select it to align to it. What am I missing in the workflow?

Did you lock the layer or the object itself?

A right click on the object will show the option to “lock position”. You should be able to select an object with a locked position.

I don't see a “lock position”, I see a lock or ctrl+l. It is locking the object not the layer.

      Using InDesign CS5

Right: This is a significant change in InDesign CS5. You cannot select locked objects…. the solution is to turn off the “Prevent Selection of Locked Objects” checkbox in the General pane of the Preferences dialog box. Then it works the way it did in CS4 and earlier.

Thanks David and Joe that will help.

Am I the only one that wishes it worked more like Illustrator?

No you're not. I hate how it works in InDesign compared to Illustrator. Time to run off to the feature request form on Adobe.com again…
