For some reason one of my indesign manuals started exporting to “Notepad” when I go through File>Adobe PDF Presets…

I have no idea what has changed to make it not create a PDF. I've tried all the PDF preset options and each time it goes through the process and opens Notepad where I get some sort of hieroglyphics or the Klingon alphabet instead of a PDF.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? Setting?

      Thanks!

It sounds as if your system is malfunctioning, and opening a PDF starts Notepad instead of Acrobat. You can test this by double-clicking a PDF in the Explorer. You can check your file extension associations and possibly repair them, or perhaps it's easier to de-install, then re-install Acrobat.

If double-clicking a PDF does start Acrobat, rather than Notepad, in the Explorer, and it's just this one file that does not work … paint me purple and call me an eggplant. The “automatically open PDF” has ID tell your system “hey! show me this PDF” — it doesn't actually start the program itself.

Sounds like you've changed your File Association for PDFs to open in Notepad.

      What OS are you on?

Google, without quotes, the following “Change File Association <insert your OS>”

Thanks guys – But it is only the one file that appears to be doing this. I have other manuals that I can go to Adobe Presets and create a PDF. Its just his one file that it is doing this on…I don't have any other issues with opening other PDFs or creating a PDF from other ID files.

Okay … I can actually duplicate this behaviour, but only if I export to “test.txt” instead of “test” (which is saved as “test.pdf”) and even “test.” (saved as “test..pdf” (!)).

Does your ID document name contain a period? (… unlikely to be the actual problem, because even if I name a file “test.txt.indd”, it gets exported by default as “test.txt.pdf”. Nevertheless … does it?)

it does have a period…but so does the one that is working. I have the revision number in the title.

      i.e. Reference Manual Rev1.2010

Fortunately — I can go to “Print” and just print to Adobe PDF and create a .pdf of the manual — so needless to say I have a workaround, I am just perplexed as to why now all of sudden it opens Notepad on this particular file when exporting to PDF.

      Thanks for the feedback!
