I was working on a table today and pressed the wrong key, discovering a shortcut to creating a new column I don't recall seieng documented any where. Instead of holding down Shift to move the column seperator without changing the dimensions of the table, I held down Alt while dragging to the right, which allowed me to drag out a new comlun. This is in CS5, no idea if it works any where else. Also, it doesn't seem to work if you drag to the left, but it does work to add rows as well.

Has any one else discovered this quick way to add a comlun/row? Or have any other neat tricks to share that they've discovered?

That's a fun tip. Yes, it's a known trick: Option/Alt drag on the right or bottom edge of a table and then drag to add rows or columns.

I never even knew you could do that, or the Shift-drag option to restrain the table's dimensions. Now to find a reason to use the 'shortcuts' a half dozen times over the next few days so I won't forget them again.

My colleagues were suitably impressed when I showed them this one! They were equally amazed by the Place Multiple Images in a Grid option and the useful little popup menu when you right-click on the Cell Strokes selector …

So, David, this was a 'known trick'? Are you kidding — how many people knew this, then, and how many more are there? :)

LOL! Oh there are dozens… hundreds more! There's always more to learn about this awesome program.

We talked about the option/alt-drag trick in the podcast a while back: https://creativepro.com/pod…..script.php

      Probably worth a blog post!

I do like that shortcut alot, I can't even remember where I learned it but have known it for a while now, at least since CS2, but it was probably here.

By the way, it's probably worth mentioning two more things here:

      1. dragging the opposite direction will remove columns/rows.

      2. dragging either direction can be done to add/subtract multiple columns/rows at a time, all depending on how far you drag.

David, that podcast was from 2008 — I just stumbled upon (™, no doubt) these “Notes on InDesign 2 as compared to FrameMaker 7“, which places it around 2002 AD:

      11. There are convenient shortcuts for all types of navigation in tables: move to first/last cell in a column/row, add/delete row/col, etc. Also, you can add rows or columns to a table simply by option-dragging the table boundary.
