Accessible PDFs: Alt text not coming through from ID

I’m on ID CS6, Mac. In an effort to make an accessible PDF of my layout, I’ve dutifully anchored images and figures in the text flow, and I’ve added alt text using Object Export Options / Alt Text/ Alt Text Source: Custom.

When the exported PDF is opened into Acrobat, out of about 15 images, only 1 has successfully retained the alt text; all the others say ‘No alternate text exists’.

      Any idea why this is?

On another note, when testing using Read Out Loud, on a table, how to make it first read the column header, then the subsequent column cells — rather than all column headers, then next row, etc.?

      Thanks in advance.

Anyone? I should add that all stories have been added to the Articles panel. Seems like I’m doing everything right, but others have gotten alt text to work in CS6, no?

Setting the alt text as XMP:Description in Bridge, then relinking in ID, works. But this is not an option for vector figures and icons formed as paths in ID; those require ‘custom’ alt text. So I’m still stumped. I can’t imagine no one else has encountered this…? Help!
