I am designing a book with parts and chapters. I want the parts and chapters to be self-numbering. I’m trying to get headings that look like “PART 3” and “CHAPTER 12”, etc. except I want the word “PART” and “CHAPTER” to have a character style than the number itself. I have tried all sorts of tricks, e.g. numbered lists in a paragraph style with nested styles, text variables, etc. with no success. Is this even possible in InDesign?

As a more general feature, is it possible to define a numbered list and drop an element of that list at an arbitrary location?

Otherwise, I’ll just manually number the book.

      Thanks!

There are several ways to add numbers like this.

You could use paragraph numbering… you can use chapter numbering in the Numbering & Sections dialog box and then use a Chapter Number variable (one of the Type > Text Variables) options…

      Some resources:

Use Numbered Lists Instead of Auto Page Numbering
