Hello! We’re about to start on a rather large project. We’re working on a Tabletop Role Playing Game (TTRPG) and the core rulebook is just over 300 pages in Word. In order to keep things manageable, I was thinking of setting things up like this:

Each chapter of the book will be a separate INDD file.
Format the Word document in a way which the styles can be imported into InDesign.

The client is likely going to continue to develop the book in Word and will send a chapter or spread to be updated rather than sending individual edits in the InDesign file.

There are going to be a lot of tables and other specially formatted blocks that will need unique styles beyond what we can do in Word. Here is a good example of the kind of document we’re laying out: https://archive.org/details/dungeon-masters-guide/Dungeon%20Master%27s%20Guide/page/n3/mode/2up

What I’m wondering is how can I best set ourselves up to succeed?

      Thanks all!

      Matt

Hey Matthew, your timing is impeccable… we’re doing a full-day event called “The InDesign + Long Documents Summit” on April 5, and a lot of it will cover the stuff you’re trying to do. I highly recommend it:

You sound like you’re well on the way in breaking it down into more manageable parts.
If you have a “book” then make sure your styles are being synced to the leading document.
