2-line drop cap adds “space after” on one-line paragraphs

Paragraph style with a 2-line drop cap to emphasize a quotation mark placed before copy (meant to be spoken aloud) in a training document that mixes narrative with instructions.

A character style makes it bolder and a different color than the paragraph.
No baseline shift or anything else that would produce wacky results, and the character style does not change the type size.

But when the style applies to a one-line paragraph, I get the equivalent of a space-after value.

The text is contained in a table, so this added vertical space produces an overset in cells that are set to an exact height—and forces other cells to run deeper than desired.

Any suggestions for getting rid of the extra vertical space after one-line paragraphs?

This is a very long document that is going to serve as a model for others in a series, so I’m attempting to style everything as much as possible and avoid manual “solutions” to work around problems.

If the paragraph style is set to create a 2-line drop cap then of course it will take up more vertical space, even with a 1-line paragraph. Can you create the same effect by applying a nested style to the first character instead of using a drop cap?

I would have thought the system would be smart enough not to add depth to a single-line paragraph.

If I apply a nested style to the first character and enlarge the text enough to get the desired result, I get the equivalent of space before.

(BTW, this site is excruciatingly slow today.)

I agree about the site speed… we’re investigating what is wrong. Sorry about that.

Here is a possible solution: instead of making the characters style a larger font size, keep the font size the same… but in Advanced Character Formats, set the Horizontal AND Vertical Scale of to something like 200%. That makes it look bigger, but doesn’t change the vertical spacing need.

      Thanks, David!

When all else fails, outsmart your software. LOL

Any chance the site is under a DDoS attack? That definitely would make it slow.

One observation after implementing that approach: I had to add negative baseline shift to pull the character down till it top-aligned with ascenders.
