2 column text box, text starts higher in 2nd column

I’m trying to utilize paragraph styles and tips learned at CreativePro week. I’ve got a multi-page document that has specific left and right side adjustments. I have to update it and pages may shift, so I’m going back through and rather than having each page with their own single text box, I’m stringing the text together and using a paragraph style to keep the text consistent. I have a 2 column text box and sometimes need to use a column break as the information needs to start at the top of the 2nd column. When I do so, the text is higher than it starts in the first column. I’ve looked all over to see if there’s a baseline shift issue (this is off, but I’ve turned it on and it doesn’t fix the problem). If it flows automatically to the top of the 2nd column, it’s fine – it’s only when I have to use a break to move it. I can’t even out the columns to make it flow properly because often the 2nd column needs to be longer.

This is driving me nuts. Can anyone help? Sorry if I’ve duplicated a thread, but I have no idea what to search to find the answer. Any insight is appreciated.

      Thank you!

Can you post a screenshot? Be sure to turn on your hidden characters.

I tried to copy and paste a screenshot, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out how.

Yes, check to see if there’s an extra empty carriage return above your 2nd column text.

Otherwise you might want to select the frame and experiment with different First Baseline Offsets (Object > Text Frame Options > Baseline Options) to see if there’s a choice and measure that evens out the two different first baselines.

I’ve tried the baseline options and it just moves everything in the text box.

      Hi Melissa,

There’s no way to copy and paste a screenshot. But if you use a cloud service, like dropbox or google drive, you can simply put the file there and post the link to it. You can do the same thing with a snippet or your whole InDesign document if you want.

      Some other things to check:

Turn on Type Menu > Show Hidden Characters. Check if there is an extra return plus the Break character.

Is there an object with Text Wrap applied above that second column?

Check the Object Menu > Text Frame Options > Baseline Options.
–Is the Vertical Justification set to anything other than Top? Set it to Top.

–Along with that: Is “Balance Columns” checked? Uncheck it. (This probably isn’t it but might as well try it while you are in there.)

–Is this one frame with two columns? Or two separate frames? If separate frames, check that both are set up the same way (including Inset Spacing).

Unfortunately our company doesn’t use those services as we have a propriety file transfer, but maybe this will work.

If it does, let me explain. The title is a paragraph style which has space after the return and spans the columns. The other text is the 2 columns and the header on the first column falls exactly where it’s supposed to according to the amount of space added to the paragraph style. Because I had to add the column break, the 2nd column then will show how it’s higher. (sorry to reiterate from the original post, but wanted to explain what the screenshot shows).

Here’s the first thing I noticed–it appears the two heads are the same–but the hard return on “POSSIBLE CAUSES” seems to be a smaller point size than the hard return for “APPEARANCE.” I wonder if it’s a different point size and leading. If that return is a different leading and applies to the entire line–then that could be the problem.

I changed the point size on the hard return and it didn’t make a difference. :(

I packaged up some of the pages to see if someone might be able to provide more insight when looking at the files…

Here’s the link to the file: https://filetransfer.mahle.com/link/EeqLQ9tNgr4YqS6DipSlR7

Thank you for everyone who has taken or will take their own time to help me figure this out!

It’s just a matter of leading applied on the carriage return! Its size is not a relavant problem source!

It’s 14 pt leading. I changed it and it didn’t make any difference. However, I didn’t save that prior to uploading the pages…

      Woo-hoo! Thanks Obi-Wan. ;-)

So you’re using Imgur for screen shots? I like how you can move from shot to shot. Hrm I’ll have to figure that one out. And it’s be great for a pinned post.

So was it the leading on the return?

There was mixed leading on the text and headers. Once I made it consistent leading, it fixed itself. I thought I just needed the leading on the return, but with the mixed leading, it was shifting.
