Okay, I admit that the title “this week in articles” is a misnomer… or perhaps it’s more that I have a very flexible idea of what a “week” is. But whatever the case, it’s fun to share all kinds of fun InDesign-related articles with y’all, in hopes that it keeps us all up to date with the newest, coolest, and most fun aspects of our work.
Here are some great links you should know about:
- Ron Bilodeau shares a fascinating method of creating headers on index pages over at O’Reilly. (I can’t say for sure, but it seems like in-tools’ Power Headers might be easier.)
- Here’s Dave Cross showing how to make an interactive slideshow kind of thing in CS5.
- Adobe Acrobat X is out at last, but even if your’e note upgrading your copy of “Pro” immediately, you can get the free Adobe X Reader anytime.
- Here are some fun and useful scripts that almost anyone could take advantage of
- Ted Padova wrote two ebooks and published them on Smashwords a while back — one is a free 7-page overview document called “Writing eBooks for the iPad“. The other one is only $3 and is called “How to Write and Sell Computer Books.”
- I love listening to Russell Viers teach. Here he is with a little video (a few years old, but still relevant) on DataMerge.
- Okay, this “InDesignLive” has nothing to do with Adobe InDesign or InDesignSecretsLive, but it’s fun to see what’s going on in the rest of the design world! Cool stuff.
- It’s not too late to buy your favorite designer (or yourself!) a gift for the holidays. I enjoyed reading Pam Pfiffner’s gift guide at creativepro.com.
- Need to create documents for people who have some (but not all) visual impairment, such as large type format books? Here’s a good web page with info that will help. And, well, here’s another one!
- Bob Bringhurst (my co-author on Real World InDesign CS5) has written an interesting piece at his Adobe blog called Sharing Text Between Two InDesign Documents. If I’m not mistaken, we’ve written this up on our own blog somewhere, but I can’t find it at the moment. Sigh. (He also wrote a summary of the new Adobe DPS solution for digital magazines, and another piece about the various magazines that are using it.)
- You’ve already likely seen Mike Rankin’s fun blog post about creating holiday lights. Claudia McCue has also written a great holiday-lights article here.
- Adobe and Woodwing are both creating tools for building interactive magazines for the iPad. But the new Project Magazine is not based on either of those. It’s a whole new thing, and it’s pretty cool.
