This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 10

3

Today is labor day, a national holiday in America to celebrate how great American workers are. I’m all for celebrating, but, um, can’t we just do it with a cake and some candles and a snappy song? No offense to union workers or non-union workers or people who were recently workers but who aren’t any longer, but as far as I can can, everyone I know (myself included) has too much work to do of one form or another!

That said, I am definitely in favor of taking a short break for education… Learn something new everyday, that’s my motto. So in that spirit, let’s take a quick diversion into some blog posts and articles that have been popping up:

  • Rufus Deuchler, adobe globetrotter extraordinaire, keeps things interesting with his new installation of CSInsider: IDcs4 to XFL to Flash video. Take a look and see what you can do when your InDesign layouts show up in Flash.
  • Speaking of XFL, that’s one of the tricks covered during a webinar that Anne-Marie and I presented for a small group of Adobe user group managers, experts, and so on. I recently got permission to show it to a wider, public audience. You can see it here! Anne-Marie shows CS4 features for the first half, then I take over and show other tips and techniques.
  • VectorTuts has a nice little tutorial on creating coupons.
  • Remember paste-up? I still have my waxer and x-acto blades! Here’s an article about what happens when a newspaper finally bids adieu to all of that… in 2009.
  • Hey, it’s Swiss Publishing Week! If you’re anywhere in that part of the world, check out this conference and say hi to Haeme Ulrich, Stephan Jaeggi, Rufus Deuchler (yes, again!), Rudi Wartmann, Daniel Sterchi, and the gang for me!
  • I just edited a great article for an upcoming issue of InDesign Magazine on ePubs (by Gabriel Powell) and it got me surfing the Web for even more eBook information. For example, I didn’t even know about O’Reilly’s Bookworm project or the ThreePress EPUB validator tool (based on Adobe’s epubcheck java code).

Well, that’s it for now! Have fun

“but as far as I can can”
I prefer bottling ;) Nice links though.

  • @Roland: LOL! That is a funny typo. I may can can in may… I can can-can, canoe? Sigh…

Glad you liked those links. I keep finding more… for example I see that Neil Oliver over at creative mentor has done a number of new videos.

  • Rick A says:

For people who have way too much to do, ask your employers if they can hire someone to help you.

    The economy could use it!
