Tektronix Phaser 840

When it comes to printers, most people (your humble author included) think all they need is something that prints quickly and cleanly and isn’t a repair enigma. Apparently there is more on heaven and earth than is dreamt of in our printer fantasies. The Tektronix Phaser, although cursed with a Star Trek-sounding moniker, can print up to 10ppm in b/w or color or 5ppm for transparencies (read: moments after you click the “print” button) with a 1,200 dpi resolution. Also scoring points is the ability to deliver rich inkjet-style color despite the solid-ink approach, the automatic email when it’s low on supplies and an often under-publicized feature; the fact that Tektronix will give you free black ink for life.
PC Magazine’s John C. Dvorak raved about it in his review, gushing “this kind of printer should be in every office in the country.” The March 1999 Presentations Magazine review called it “a unique and highly appealing printer – not average at all.” Government Computer News gave it a short review, but it was on their “Best of 1999 Products” page.
