Tektronix Phaser 740

Like its brother, Tektronix Phaser 840, the Phaser 740 is hailed as a robust workhorse of a printer. Although not completely wart-free, it does have enough respectable attributes to merit praise. Like the Phaser 840, it has true 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution for monochrome (600 dpi for color) and its print speeds (16ppm monochrome and 5ppm color) are truly impressive. The main selling point of the printer though, appears to be its price. While $1,439 for its mono-only configuration (the Phaser 740L) is expensive, the cost for a color outfitting can make the price lower than a base model color printer.
Lori Grunin’s ZDNet review is a nice terse piece, although it’s mostly concerned with the cost. The UK’s IT Partnerships wrote an exhaustive review of both the 740 and 840 printers. Although some British terms are included, be not afraid, they load on the accolades. InfoWorld Publishing matched the Phaser 740 against some tough competitors in their 1998 review, including the Brother HL-2400CN, the HP Color LaserJet 4500 N, the Lexmark Optra Color SC 1275n, the NEC SuperScript 4400N and the QMS magicolor 2 CX. Although, not a clear winner, the review states “this model will definitely live to see the next millennium.”
