When you type 4mm type size in Illustrator, what is it measuring?

You probably know that you can change the rulers (and therefore most of the input fields) to mm by right-clicking the rulers (or, better, the little square where they intersect). However, that won’t change the type and leading inputs, which will stay in points because points have been the standard for typography for a century or more.
