It's always hard to get InDesign to link two separate paragraphs on a page. But there are a couple of ways to achieve the goal, I think.

For example, you could make the table of contents have NO page numbers, and add the numbering like this:

https://creativepro.com/usi…..-a-toc.php

Or you could make the numbering with cross-references instead of a TOC. Maybe adding invisible numbering to the heads…

Or you could make the TOC based on “invisible” paragraphs:

https://creativepro.com/cre…..lt-toc.php

good luck!

Thanks, David! I think I found a solution, though I still could use some help. I couldn't get my mind around the first example (https://creativepro.com/usi…..-a-toc.php), and I have no experience with cross-references yet, so I jumped to option 3 – “invisible” paragraphs (https://creativepro.com/cre…..lt-toc.php). I just created an invisible text box on top of each hymn and put in it the title, a tab and the hymn number. By supressing page numbers in the TOC dialog and selecting alphabetical sorting, I'm good to go. My problem is that I don't know about getting the hymn numbers to go to the right margin in the TOC. Do I need to do a right tab in the invisible text boxes, or just tweet the TOC entries paragraph style and insert a leader? I tried everything I could think of, but can't seem to get it.
