We figured it out. It could be both InDesign and Word issues with formatting/importing, InDesign is picking something up from the Word doc. Word doc copy is placed into threaded frames. The frame itself has been converted to a path (text on path) automatically, so you see the familiar text begin/end lines of type on path. The way to fix it is to select frame with select tool > Type > Type on Path > remove type on path.
