In Japanese, sometimes people don’t know what a particular kanji character is (perhaps because it’s a rare one) so they don’t know how to pronounce it. Rubi is little tiny characters in the phonetic “alphabet” of hiragana that are stuck to the side of the main character.

For example, look at the tiny little characters above some of the text here:

Unfortunately, the US version of InDesign doesn’t offer them, unless you have the World Tools plug-in (in-tools.com). So I’m not sure how you would search for them. I would have assumed there was a feature in the Find/Change dialog box for this. No?
