Yeah, this is frustrating and it’s kind of tricky. The best way I found is using a script (free) by Rorohiko: https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/textstitch/. You can easily thread/unthread without causing a havoc. Try it and let us know how it goes.
