I set Word to save my documents as .RTF instead of .DOCX. This solved 2 problems:

1. Even older versions of Word (before version 2007) can open it and
2. No more problems with InDesign import.

DOCX plug-in in InDesign doesn’t work properly. For example, some footnotes are not imported correctly, or not at all.
