One way to do this would be:

Create a rectangle
Select the white-arrow “Direct Selection” tool
Deselect by clicking somewhere there are no objects
Click on one of the corners with the tool
Move it up or down by dragging, or pressing the arrow keys on the keyboard, or adjusting the Y value in the Properties or Control panel
