Right, you may look at other ways to manage text. Understanding Paragraph Styles and Character Styles is most important. You can also link to Word Documents and Excel files (not just place them), then you can update the text in Word or Excel and have it apply to your InDesign document. Preferences->File Handling->Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files.

Also, you can make a New->Book and add individual documents to it. Then you can apply Styles to every document that’s in the book. You can also use Find->Replace in All Documents in a Book. This is a bit complicated, but may help you.
