Canon recently announced the $1,000 Pixma Pro-1 inkjet printer, which is aimed at professional photographers wanting to make their own prints without giving up quality. The Pro-1 uses 12 inks to do so: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Red, Photo Cyan, Photo Magenta, Photo Black, Matte Black, Gray, Dark Gray, Light Gray, and Chroma Optimizer. Canon says that these inks not only result in more realistic skin tones, but blacks that are richer and smoother, with less graininess, bronzing, and metamerism. Canon also says that the Chroma Optimizer increases the color gamut, gives greater punch to black density, and smoothes out any bumps between ink droplets.
The networkable Pro-1 can output prints as large as 13″ x 19″ sized in about four minutes and 20 seconds. Larger ink tanks (2.5 times larger!) free you from changing tanks as often as users had to in previous Pixma models.
Wilhelm Imaging Research reports that Pro-1 prints made on Canon’s semi-gloss media won’t fade for about 70 years. You can download ICC Profiles for Hahnemuhle, Ilford, Moab, and other paper types from www.usa.canon.com/pixmapro.
