NASCAR Legend Rusty Wallace Issues Graphics Designers Unusual Challenge: Design a Better NASCAR Truck or Get Left in the Dust

In an unusual move to engage creatives, NewPage Corporation’s graphic designer-centric Web site, thetrueyou.com, is providing one winner a rare opportunity to design a NASCAR truck with the sole purpose of promoting themselves or their clients.  Open to all U.S. designers, contestants can enter by filling out the online application form and stating why they would be the best designer for the job.  On July 1, 2005, three finalists will be announced, each of whom will receive $1,000 to create design concepts.  A panel of designers and NASCAR experts will review the finalists’ work and choose the winner whose creative talent will be displayed during the NASCAR race in Las Vegas, September 24, 2005.

“Why a NASCAR truck?” says Greg Gruning, marketing vice president for NewPage Coated Paper.  “Besides this exposure to a new medium, nearly 100,000 fans will be in attendance, not to mention the huge television audience watching on the Speed Channel.  Secondly, the value of this opportunity is more than your typical marketing budget.  Lastly, think of the company the winner will be keeping – some of the biggest names in corporate America sponsor NASCAR races.  NewPage has been actively participating in the NASCAR arena for over 10 years, so we know its powerful potential.  Rusty Wallace was gracious enough to lend his name to this challenge.”
But wait, there’s more.  In addition to having one’s design talents showcased in front of those major corporate sponsors who could become that next important client, the winner will also receive: roundtrip airfare to Las Vegas and hotel accommodations for five; passes to the race; an honorary pit crew experience; countless photo opportunities, and much more.  Not only is the memory priceless, but the lucky winner will have an exciting new addition to his or her portfolio.
The company’s outreach to graphic designers, through its www.thetrueyou.com site, offers interesting challenges, educational tools, mentoring, and unusual incentives to graphic designers across the industry.
