Letter from the Editor
When I was trying to think of a good metaphor for the topic of this month’s feature article, remote collaboration with InDesign, a lot of things came to mind. I thought about players on sports teams passing the ball back and forth to score points and win the game. Ballroom dancers, following each other’s steps in constant communication as they perform in tandem, also seemed like a good choice.
But the metaphor I ended up liking the best was singing a karaoke duet. That might be due to the fact that I’m already looking forward to some collaborative crooning with my fellow CreativePro Week attendees in Music City next summer. It might also have something to do with the fact that the article’s author, Pariah Burke, hosts a syndicated rock ’n’ roll radio show.
But all that aside, the karaoke duet is a fitting comparison. In the InDesign-InCopy workflow, each person has their own moment to shine, yet they rely on timing, harmony, and respect for each other’s rhythm. They can be standing near or far apart, but the machine blends their contributions with the background track to make a crowd-pleasing performance. Mic drop.
The musical vibe continues with Kat Kremser’s first look at Project Turntable, which gives Illustrator users the ability to rotate a vector graphic and see what it would look like from other angles. Groovy, indeed.
Beyond Turntable, Adobe has been giving a lot of love to Illustrator recently. You can use this month’s Work Week Projects to explore several exciting new features, including vastly improved gradients, some welcome additions to artboards, powerful new features for managing fonts, and a panel for quickly incorporating your vector art into photographic mockups. I hope some of those features find their way into InDesign soon.
We also have double dose of Nigel French this month, with an article on how sweating the details will help you to be a better designer and his new, members-only video on how to set great-looking body text in InDesign. In the video, Nigel distills all his most important tips and techniques into a nine-minute symphony on typography in long documents. Seriously, Beethoven’s got nothing on Nigel.
